Durable sculptural processes originally used carving (the removal of material) and modelling (the addition of material, as clay), in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials but, since Modernism, there has been an almost complete freedom of materials and process. A wide variety of materials may be worked by removal such as carving, assembled by welding or modelling, or molded, or cast. Sculpture in stone survives far better than works of art in perishable materials, and often represents the majority of the surviving works (other than pottery) from ancient cultures, though conversely traditions of sculpture in wood may have vanished almost entirely. However, most ancient sculpture was brightly painted, and this has been lost. Those cultures whose sculptures have survived in quantities include the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean, India and China, as well as many in South America and Africa. The Western tradition of sculpture began in ancient Greece, and Greece is widely seen as producing great masterpieces in the classical period. During the Middle Ages, Gothic sculpture represented the agonies and passions of the Christian faith. The revival of classical models in the Renaissance produced famous sculptures such as Michelangelo's David. Modernist sculpture moved away from traditional processes and the emphasis on the depiction of the human body, with the making of constructed sculpture, and the presentation of found objects as finished art works. Types of sculpture. Relief is often classified by the degree of projection from the wall into low or bas- relief, high relief, and sometimes an intermediate mid- relief. Sunk- relief is a technique restricted to ancient Egypt. Relief is the usual sculptural medium for large figure groups and narrative subjects, which are difficult to accomplish in the round, and is the typical technique used both for architectural sculpture, which is attached to buildings, and for small- scale sculpture decorating other objects, as in much pottery, metalwork and jewellery. Relief sculpture may also decorate steles, upright slabs, usually of stone, often also containing inscriptions. Another basic distinction is between subtractive carving techniques, which remove material from an existing block or lump, for example of stone or wood, and modelling techniques which shape or build up the work from the material. Techniques such as casting, stamping and moulding use an intermediate matrix containing the design to produce the work; many of these allow the production of several copies. The term . But the term properly covers many types of small works in three dimensions using the same techniques, including coins and medals, hardstone carvings, a term for small carvings in stone that can take detailed work. The very large or . Another grand form of portrait sculpture is the equestrian statue of a rider on horse, which has become rare in recent decades. The smallest forms of life- size portrait sculpture are the . Small forms of sculpture include the figurine, normally a statue that is no more than 1. Modern and contemporary art have added a number of non- traditional forms of sculpture, including sound sculpture, light sculpture, environmental art, environmental sculpture, street art sculpture, kinetic sculpture (involving aspects of physical motion), land art, and site- specific art. Sculpture is an important form of public art. A collection of sculpture in a garden setting can be called a sculpture garden. Purposes and subjects. Cult images are common in many cultures, though they are often not the colossal statues of deities which characterized ancient Greek art, like the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. The actual cult images in the innermost sanctuaries of Egyptian temples, of which none have survived, were evidently rather small, even in the largest temples. The same is often true in Hinduism, where the very simple and ancient form of the lingam is the most common. Buddhism brought the sculpture of religious figures to East Asia, where there seems to have been no earlier equivalent tradition, though again simple shapes like the bi and cong probably had religious significance. Small sculptures as personal possessions go back to the earliest prehistoric art, and the use of very large sculpture as public art, especially to impress the viewer with the power of a ruler, goes back at least to the Great Sphinx of some 4,5. In archaeology and art history the appearance, and sometimes disappearance, of large or monumental sculpture in a culture is regarded as of great significance, though tracing the emergence is often complicated by the presumed existence of sculpture in wood and other perishable materials of which no record remains. The ability to summon the resources to create monumental sculpture, by transporting usually very heavy materials and arranging for the payment of what are usually regarded as full- time sculptors, is considered a mark of a relatively advanced culture in terms of social organization. Recent unexpected discoveries of ancient Chinese bronze age figures at Sanxingdui, some more than twice human size, have disturbed many ideas held about early Chinese civilization, since only much smaller bronzes were previously known. The Mississippian culture seems to have been progressing towards its use, with small stone figures, when it collapsed. Other cultures, such as ancient Egypt and the Easter Island culture, seem to have devoted enormous resources to very large- scale monumental sculpture from a very early stage. The collecting of sculpture, including that of earlier periods, goes back some 2,0. Greece, China and Mesoamerica, and many collections were available on semi- public display long before the modern museum was invented. From the 2. 0th century the relatively restricted range of subjects found in large sculpture expanded greatly, with abstract subjects and the use or representation of any type of subject now common. Today much sculpture is made for intermittent display in galleries and museums, and the ability to transport and store the increasingly large works is a factor in their construction. Small decorative figurines, most often in ceramics, are as popular today (though strangely neglected by modern and Contemporary art) as they were in the Rococo, or in ancient Greece when Tanagra figurines were a major industry, or in East Asian and Pre- Columbian art. Small sculpted fittings for furniture and other objects go well back into antiquity, as in the Nimrud ivories, Begram ivories and finds from the tomb of Tutankhamun. Portrait sculpture began in Egypt, where the Narmer Palette shows a ruler of the 3. BCE, and Mesopotamia, where we have 2. Gudea, who ruled Lagash c. In ancient Greece and Rome, the erection of a portrait statue in a public place was almost the highest mark of honour, and the ambition of the elite, who might also be depicted on a coin. Rulers are typically the only people given portraits in Pre- Columbian cultures, beginning with the Olmec colossal heads of about 3,0. East Asian portrait sculpture was entirely religious, with leading clergy being commemorated with statues, especially the founders of monasteries, but not rulers, or ancestors. The Mediterranean tradition revived, initially only for tomb effigies and coins, in the Middle Ages, but expanded greatly in the Renaissance, which invented new forms such as the personal portrait medal. Animals are, with the human figure, the earliest subject for sculpture, and have always been popular, sometimes realistic, but often imaginary monsters; in China animals and monsters are almost the only traditional subjects for stone sculpture outside tombs and temples. The kingdom of plants is important only in jewellery and decorative reliefs, but these form almost all the large sculpture of Byzantine art and Islamic art, and are very important in most Eurasian traditions, where motifs such as the palmette and vine scroll have passed east and west for over two millennia. One form of sculpture found in many prehistoric cultures around the world is specially enlarged versions of ordinary tools, weapons or vessels created in impractical precious materials, for either some form of ceremonial use or display or as offerings. Jade or other types of greenstone were used in China, Olmec Mexico, and Neolithic Europe, and in early Mesopotamia large pottery shapes were produced in stone. Bronze was used in Europe and China for large axes and blades, like the Oxborough Dirk. Materials and techniques. The classic materials, with outstanding durability, are metal, especially bronze, stone and pottery, with wood, bone and antler less durable but cheaper options. Precious materials such as gold, silver, jade, and ivory are often used for small luxury works, and sometimes in larger ones, as in chryselephantine statues. More common and less expensive materials were used for sculpture for wider consumption, including hardwoods (such as oak, box/boxwood, and lime/linden); terracotta and other ceramics, wax (a very common material for models for casting, and receiving the impressions of cylinder seals and engraved gems), and cast metals such as pewter and zinc (spelter). But a vast number of other materials have been used as part of sculptures, in ethnographic and ancient works as much as modern ones. Sculptures are often painted, but commonly lose their paint to time, or restorers. Many different painting techniques have been used in making sculpture, including tempera, oil painting, gilding, house paint, aerosol, enamel and sandblasting. One of Pablo Picasso's most famous sculptures included bicycle parts. Alexander Calder and other modernists made spectacular use of painted steel. Since the 1. 96. 0s, acrylics and other plastics have been used as well. I’m starting pathology tomorrow. Tomorrow is the first day of school for a lot of medical, dental, nursing, physician assistant, medical technology, veterinary, and other allied health students.
I hope I didn’t miss anyone. Most of you will be faced with the beginning of a pathology course tomorrow (or if not tomorrow, soon). And except for a couple scenes from CSI and X Files, most of you will have had little exposure to pathology before. What can you do to make some big- picture sense out of the fire- hose amount of minutae you’ll be faced with over the next weeks/months? The short answer to pretty much any question you have about pathology is: Robbins. The longer answer is: there are several formats of Robbins, and you should pick the one that’s the most useful for you. There are also a bunch of websites that can be very useful as you go through your course. Let’s take a look. Robbins. Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease (now in its 8th edition) is the Bible of pathology. It’s used in pretty much every med school pathology course in the US, but it’s so good that pathology residents – and even staff pathologists – have it on the shelf and pull it down a lot. This version of Robbins is called “big Robbins”, and for good reason: 1. It’s definitely complete and thorough – but the best thing about it is the way it’s written. Somehow the authors manage to take huge topics and distill them into a few really representative sentences or paragraphs. And the information is very current; with each edition, new and relevant research is added in (in a readable way, compared to the original papers). For most of you, this will be your reference throughout your course. If time was not an issue, I’d advise my students (and you) to read through each chapter as you’re covering it in class. For most students, that’s just not feasible – so you’ll likely end up just doing your best, reading in depth only on the things that are confusing from class, and looking up things you’ve forgotten. There is also a great little summary book that most students call “baby Robbins.” The real name is Pocket Companion to Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 8th edition. It has 8. 00 cute little pages and it wouldn’t hold any door open, though it works great to prop up your i. Phone. If you’re a medical or dental student, this would be a great book to thumb through before (or at the beginning of) your pathology course just to give you an overview of everything. Also, if you can’t read big Robbins, you might just read through the part of baby Robbins that corresponds to what you’re doing in class. It’s very doable – just a few small pages on each system, and you’ll get a great overview of what you’ll be learning. If you’re an allied health student, and your path course is really short, this just might be enough of a reference for you. Finally, there’s a third format of Robbins that doesn’t have a universally- accepted name (I’ve heard both “medium Robbins” and “teenage Robbins” but there are probably other names). The official name is Robbins Basic Pathology (which sounds confusingly similar to Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease). This book is, as you’d expect, a medium- sized version of Robbins: 9. Robbins, but with less information overall. Med Student Books is dedicated to providing money. AKA “Red Robbins,” is the best pathology USMLE style question bank/book for the. Robbins and Cotran Pathology Review can also be purchased for Kindle as an. USMLE Consult's Robbins Pathology Question Bank. USMLE Consult's Robbins Pathology Review Plan features. Robbins Pathology Question Bank: $35: $55: $65. This is the book we use in our dental student pathology course because big Robbins is way too big, and baby Robbins doesn’t have enough detail to cover what dental students need to know for boards. I don’t expect my students to read every word, but just to use it as they see fit. It seems they use it to look up stuff that doesn’t make sense, or to refer back to material we covered earlier. If you’re a medical student, you could use this book as a quick reference, but you’ll still need big Robbins. However, if you’re a dental, physician assistant, nursing or veterinary student, it’s an adequate source. It’s probably overkill for medical technology and allied health students. There’s a couple ancillary Robbins products that I’ve used from time to time. I recently got a box of Robbins flashcards, and I think they’re pretty good. They seem like they’d be helpful to flip through when you get sick of looking at your notes. There’s also a Robbins flashcards app on i. Tunes which I don’t have but would assume to be similar to the paper version. There’s also a review book called, not surprisingly, Robbins and Cotran Review of Pathology. This book has a bunch of questions in it, and they’re vignette- style which is good to prepare you for boards. Finally, I just saw that there is a Robbins Pathology Atlas out now – I haven’t used this, and I don’t really think it would be necessary in most cases. Unless you’re way into pathology, big Robbins should show you everything you need to know visually. Websites. There are a bunch of websites out there (besides Pathology Student!) that are good for students taking pathology courses. Here are my favorites: 1. Download Robbins Basic Pathology 9th Edition PDF book free from here. Download Robbins Basic Pathology 9th Edition PDF book free from. 1200 Pathology board review questions with expansive explanations to prepare for the. The question format is fairly straightforward and does not include questions with Ed’s Pathology Notes (or The Pathology Guy). Nice, detailed, easy to read information on pretty much anything you’d want to know about pathology. I’ve used this a lot, even as a resident. It’s basically a really, really complete set of medical student pathology notes. Tons of images (gross and microscopic), along with little clinical tidbits. There’s even a section on general pathology (e. This website has a nice atlas (with info to go along with each image) and also a bunch of other resources. Really encyclopedic (with journal references) but great if you can’t find something in your usual resources. The information is more in outline format (hence the name) than paragraph format – but sometimes that’s preferable. Finally. There are some posts that are good introductions to pathology: A quick review of cell injury (this is one of the first things you’ll cover, so you might want to read this now), What causes cancer (also a topic you’ll hit up early in your course), Melanoma, carcinoma, some kind of - noma (you’ll have to learn the language of pathology – and one of the first places this happens is with tumors), and differentiation and anaplasia (more terms you’ll have to learn). I also have a list of resources you can use when you start studying for boards here, here and here; you might find something useful in there. You might also want to sign up for Path Bites (in the left hand column near the top of this page), which is a daily email I send out containing some little pathology tidbit, sometimes with a photo, sometimes just text. It’s kind of a nice way to review pathology and keep stuff fresh in your mind. You can also sign up to get our posts by email (also in the left hand column on this page). If all else fails, feel free to email me (pathology@pathologystudent. I hope you have a great course with some great teachers! I think everyone should read this book. I've given it to people in many different fields, some having nothing to do with software, consulting etc. It's a must have in any library! He does this in a humorous and appealing ways, using stories and examples from multiple domains, making this book not only informative and educational, but also a fun experience for the reader. Since the very beginning of this book, I got a feeling that I could trust what the writer says (writes), and as I continued to read on, This trust had increased more, even when some of things written are a hard to implement and require self discipline and character, I do believe that by following the principles offered I can (and will) be a better consultant and of a better service to my customers. I could already detect myself using some of the stuff without deliberate intention. I would claim that this book is a must have in every consultant's library. The only regret I have about reading this book, is that I haven. While I look forward to applying these rules in my work as a Test Lead, I think they will also help in my interactions with consultants in my workplace. I only wish I have read it before I tried to be a consultant myself. For me, a recently started consultant, this book provides a font of knowledge and experience very useful. As it is says in the book, the book itself is a kind of a consultant in paper. Not being a native English speaker, sometimes I find it hard to motivate myself to read books in English (except for educational materials required for my professional development). However, this book had been continuously recommended by my most trusted friends, so I decided it is worth making an effort - - and never regretted. First, it is one of the most in- depth and comprehensive books on psychology of consulting written by non- psychologists. The exquisite art of giving out advice, while respecting the decision maker's sensitive ego and fragile self- esteem, is almost extinct nowadays. The ability to accept advice without anxiety or offense and apply it effectively is also a rare talent. Under these conditions, consulting becomes a misused and undervalued marginal practice. As a client: - Have you ever quietly stewed, as those smarty pants claimed that they can teach you how to manage the problems which had plagued your business or your life for many years?- Have you ever envied those megabucks the consultants get just for blabbering and giving out commonsense advice?- Have you ever thought their hourly pay is a racket, because under such conditions they are not interested in solving clients' problems? As a consultant: - Have you ever woken up in cold sweat screaming: ! My whole life is one big mistake! It will be helpful and inspiring for those new to consulting, but also will cheer up and comfort the experienced consultants. Second, this book provides handy framework for thinking about consulting and your own role in it, your personal input, achievements, failures, expectations and so on, as a complex system. Thus, it enables further re- evaluation of personal experience and the exploration of new ways to apply it to your consulting practice. Third, I certainly cannot overlook an important bonus: this book seemed very kind and funny for me. I don't know whether it is a benefit worth mentioning, but this book left me in a much better mood, yeah. Finally, to those studying English as a foreign language - - tons of nice idioms served in a comprehensible context are awaiting you in this book! I normally, with great fervour in fact, hoard my books; oh I'll quite willingly point to where I think ? I've thrust it into the hands of people who I thought needed. And I guess they did - for I never got the copies back! Weinberg’s Secrets of Consulting. The Secrets of Consulting is now available as an eBook at http:// Only $9.99 and no shipping.
